WhatIfWe exists for one sentence: "we should do a trip." Every group says it. The groups that go are the ones that turn it into dates before the feeling fades. One link, everyone taps their free days, the best days appear.
Why the friends trip never happens
A friends trip starts at dinner or in the chat, and everyone's in. Someone says they'll make a poll. A week passes. Two people answer. The thread moves on to something funnier. Nobody said no. The chat scrolled past the trip.
Eight adults wanted to go. The tool failed. A chat is a place where availability goes to disappear. Each "I could do mid-June?" is data, and the chat throws it away within an hour.
How does WhatIfWe fix the friends trip?
WhatIfWe gives the trip a page instead of a thread. The page holds what the chat drops: everyone's free days, added whenever each person gets to it. Nobody has to answer at the same time. Nobody has to scroll back. The overlap builds by itself, and the best days appear where the whole group can see them.
WhatIfWe finds days in a row, not time slots. A friends trip needs three shared days in a row. The app hunts for those.
How to plan a friends trip
1
Make it a plan
Name it. Pick a window. "Fall trip, sometime Sept–Oct" is enough.
2
Send the link where the idea lives
Drop it in the same chat that said "we should."
3
Let the days accumulate
People tap their free days over a few evenings. You can see who joined and who hasn't marked days.
4
Confirm and calendar it
Lock the best days. Everyone taps them onto their calendar.
Turning one trip into the annual one
Plan next year's trip on the last night of this one. Everyone's there and nobody's calendar has filled. Pick the window on the spot, same month next year, and start the plan while the fire's still going. Traditions are dates that defend themselves.
Where should a friends trip go?
Scattered friend groups have a destination problem disguised as a generosity problem. The same two people travel every year, because they're easy about it, and the trip becomes "visiting the others." A standing trip survives on rotation or midpoints. Rotate whose city hosts, or pick a spot that costs everyone the same effort: a cabin a half-day from all of you and home to none of you.
Neutral ground has a second virtue: nobody's the host. When the trip is at someone's place, that friend shops and apologizes for the shower. At a rented midpoint, everyone's a guest and the trip belongs to the group.
What if the friends trip keeps failing?
A trip that's failed three years running is too big. Cut it in half and let it succeed once. A two-night cabin with five of the ten rebuilds the muscle. Next year the other five see the photos and the grid fills in a day. Whoever shows up founds the tradition. Envy grows it.
Three ways a friends trip still fails
- Waiting for the perfect year. Eight adults are never all unbusy. Pick the days with the most people and go. The trip that happens at 80% beats the perfect trip at never.
- Nobody owns it. "Someone should set that up" is how it died last year. The person reading this page is the owner.
- Dates agreed, never confirmed. "June-ish" dissolves on contact with real life. Confirm the dates and put them on calendars. Plans harden around visible dates.
Questions, answered
How do you plan a trip with friends who are all busy?
WhatIfWe lets each friend mark the days they're free across a window. The days with the most overlap appear, and busy stops being a veto.
Why do friend trips always fall apart?
Friend trips die in the scheduling. A chat can hold the excitement. It can't hold eight calendars. Messages scroll away and the plan dissolves. A WhatIfWe page holds what the chat drops.
How far ahead should a friends trip be planned?
Plan a friends trip two to four months out, more if flights are involved. For an annual trip, pick next year's window before this year's trip ends.
What if only half the group can make it?
WhatIfWe shows who fits which days, so you can see whether to wait for everyone or go now. Go. A trip with five of ten beats a cancelled trip with ten of ten.
Is WhatIfWe free?
Yes. WhatIfWe is free for any number of friends, with no paid tier. Friends open your link without an account and sign in when they add their days.
How do we keep the dates from drifting once they're picked?
Confirm them in WhatIfWe and put them on calendars: one tap for Google Calendar, .ics for everything else. A date on nine calendars has nine defenders.
Does WhatIfWe work for a dinner or game night too?
Yes. WhatIfWe finds the best days in a row for multi-day trips. Single-day plans get simple best-day voting. Same link, shorter plan.
